CAPTION FOR CHESS TOURNAMENT PICTURE

 

1962 Armed Forces Chess Tournament, Lafayette Square USO Club, Washington, D.C., October 13-20. The 1962 inter-service champion, Sp4 Roy D. Mallett, of Fourth Armored Division, US Army, Europe (seated, left), makes a play against Pvt E-2 Harry Mayer, Fort Knox, Ky, who placed second in the one-two Army victory.

 

Maj General J. C. Lambert, The Adjutant General of the Army, whose office monitors Army participation in the chess competition through its Special Services program, watches with interest (left, background). Standing extreme left is Sidney Wallach of New York City, Executive Secretary of the American Chess Foundation, which sponsors the  annual event under a grant from Thomas Emery also of New York.

 

Sp4 Laszlo Incze, Fort Richardson, Alaska, the third Army representative in the tournament, and Everett Raffell of Silver Spring, Maryland, Tournament Director for the Chess Foundation, are shown standing at right.

 

Captain Charles D. Mott, Bureau of Naval Weapons, Washington, D. C., placed third in the closely contested tournament. Airman Ross F. Sprague, Chanute Air Force Base, Illinois, and Airman Robert W. Walker, Lowry Air Force Base, Colorado, tied for fourth place.
